#FridayFrivolity New Year's Resolutions 2017

#FridayFrivolity New Year's Resolutions

Happy Friday everyone!  I hope you all had a joyful holiday season and are gearing up for a fulfilling, progress-filled 2017.  Our theme at #FridayFrivolity this week is New Year's Resolutions... perfect timing, right??

I posted periodically last year on specific goals / resolutions, but while I think goals can be useful even if they aren't met in their entirety or quite on time -- yay progress in any form! -- 2017 is going to require a pretty big shift in gears for me.  (More on that very soon! 😜 )  Given that, I tried to think more holistically about the changes that are coming, and the things I would like to achieve, and went from there.

If I were to pick one word to define my goals for the coming year, I think it would be "intention."  Y'all know I'm all about living with intention!  ;P  But I think that purposeful-ness will be even more important for me in 2017.  I am so excited to see all the adventures this year will bring!

Best Bedtime / Relaxing Yoga to Stream on Youtube

Best Bedtime / Relaxing Yoga for Evening Stress Relief! Free streaming routines to relieve stress and anxiety while increasing flexibility and easing back pain. via Devastate Boredom
*Whew*  I don't know about y'all, but it feels like life has been throwing a lot at me lately.  A big move, a new city, a new job situation (which I'm thankful for!   But at the same time, having irregular part-time hours can involve its own kind of stress...), a car break-in last month, and other assorted craziness... my favorite hat even blew off my head and down the side of a mountain!  *rolls eyes dramatically*

If life has been throwing a lot at you too, you're going to want to keep reading!  Because while I can't whisk us off to the beach, I DO have two awesome free yoga routines for night time stress relief to share with you, and you're going to want to give them a try.  "Ummm no, I won't," you might be thinking, "I tried yoga once in college and hated it... I even fell over that time when I was trying to do the upside down dog pose..."

Don't worry, I get where you're coming from, and I still think you're going to want to try these!  There's nothing like stretching, deep breathing, and a little "zen" music to quiet a restless mind.  And I promise, neither of these contain downward facing dog, or require you to do anything remotely "athletic" -- they really are all about stretching, and relaxing, and giving your mind a break.  They are specifically designed for calming you down before bed, but you can use them whenever you want to relax.

Plus, they're only 20 minutes long.  So much good for you, with such a small time commitment!  You can do this!  ;P

YogaTX Bedtime Yoga:

There are a few different YogaTX bedtime routines, but this one is my favorite -- if you want an even shorter one however, you could try out this 13 minute night time routine...

Yoga with Adrienne, Yoga for Bedtime:

This is another great one, gentle and restful... she calls it "yummy," and it's such a good routine that I'm kind of okay with that, rofl.

I've done a TON of "bedtime" yoga routines, and some of them are way too "awake" and energetic, and others you will finish and your back is still hurting... but both of these are the perfect combo of stretching and relaxation.

Give one a try tonight, and the other tomorrow night, and let me know what you think!  ;)

The 3 Best Relaxing Puzzle Game Apps to Distract You When You're Anxious - Stress Relief on Your Phone - via Devastate Boredom

I don't know about you, but when I'm stressed my mind can go a mile a minute.  Whirling thoughts, dwelling on whatever circumstances are causing the anxiety... not fun.  There are plenty of ways to deal with it when it happens, and believe me, I've tried them all!  ;P  Deep breathing, meditating on a scripture verse or motivating quote, rereading specific favorite books, calling a friend, yoga, etc etc -- but today I'm going to share another fun option for calming / distracting a spinning mind... one you might not have tried yet!

Part 2 - 7 "Steps" for Improving Your Posture and Alignment - Small Changes Towards Better Back and Foot Health! Tips, Tricks, Stretches and Resources - Part 2

Definitely need to try these! Pain-free back, here we come! 7 Steps Towards Better Posture and Alignment - Tips, Tricks, Stretches, and Resources - Small, easy changes to begin a journey to a healthier back and feet - via Devastate Boredom

Disclaimer:  I am not a medical professional!  I am sharing my own experiences only.  All bodies are different, so be sure to consult your doctor if you have questions or concerns.

Last week I shared a kind of crazy story with y'all... the fact that I have had MUCH less foot pain lately, and apparently have gone up a shoe size, all since starting to improve my posture and alignment. Then the other day I shared four of my favorite tips and tricks for improving posture and alignment.

Today I'm going to wrap up with three more steps (ahaha I'm so punny...) ideas and resources that I have found helpful in improving my foot and back health.  Hurray for being proactive with our health and fitness!

7 Beginners Tips for Better Posture and Foot / Body Alignment - Part 2:

See here for Tips 1-4!

5.  Switch all your shoes to FLATS with a nice roomy toe-box.

There is an awesome (/awful) diagram in Whole Body Barefoot that shows what happens to your weight-distribution on your joints when you wear heels... suffice to say, wearing heels is truly terrible for your body.  From your feet on up to your neck -- it's all connected by ligaments and muscles, so it is quite possible that high heels (or even the lower-but-still raised heels on your tennis shoes or boots) are causing headaches, backaches, etc.  Read the book if you don't believe me!

Now, about the toe-box -- spread your toes out flat on a piece of paper and trace around your foot.  Compare that tracing against the base of your current shoes.  Is there enough room for your toes to spread out inside your shoes, or are they getting squished into an unnaturally tight space?  You SHOULD be able to stretch your toes out fully inside your shoe, so you're probably going to need shoes with a roomier toe box.

Also, whether you realize it or not, all standard tennis shoes have a built-in lift in the heel.  The next time you need new walking shoes, consider switching to one with an 8mm heel height.  Then, 6 months or a year later, after you've worn those out and your legs have accustomed to that switch, you can move to a 4mm drop... and then from there, a good while later, you can consider transitioning to minimalist shoes if that interests you.

Minimalist shoes are completely flat, which means your body can be in for a painful shock and/or injury if you go straight from standard shoes to minimalist ones.  That is never recommended!  I'm personally in 4 mm New Balance shoes now after spending a year in 8 mm Saucony.  The drop from 8 to 4 mm didn't give me much discomfort (though I was doing my walking in pancake-flat TX, which probably helped), but the original switch from standard tennis shoes to 8 mm in hilly GA... oh baby!   I frequently ended walks with screaming calves.  So take it slow, and even consider alternating between your standard shoes and 8 mm's for a couple of weeks when first transitioning.

6.  Have full-length mirrors around your house in strategic places, to remind you to check your alignment.

When my husband and I moved into our current apartment, we laughed together about all of the mirrors.  There is an AWKWARD number of mirrors in this apartment!  There is a giant mirror attached to the wall as you enter from the front door, large enough to fill almost that whole wall.  The kitchen is "wallpapered" with black glazed tiles that reflect just like mirrors.  One of the two bedrooms has another huge mirror, filling a whole wall, and the bathroom is completely tiled with mirrors as well.  When I stand in front of my bathroom sink, dozens of my reflection stare back at me from all angles.  A little weird, right?

But it's PERFECT for improving my alignment.

In almost any room I'm in, I can glance over to a mirror and check my body alignment.  I have become so much more aware of keeping a neutral arch in my back and keeping my weight over my heels, just based on having a visual of myself rather than having to guess based on "feel" alone.

We will be moving again in a month or so, and I plan to buy multiple full-length mirrors to strategically place around our new place.  Places I suggest to "mirrorize" -- in front of the bathroom sink, by the kitchen sink and dishwasher, in front of your yoga mat or wherever you exercise and stretch at home, in front of your washer and dryer, etc.  Anywhere you tend to stand still or bend over a good bit will be helpful, so that you can check that you have a neutral arch in your back and that your weight is centered over your feet rather than slouching, or leaning forward or back.

7.  Read the Fit2B blog, Katy Bowman's blog, or check out one of Katy Bowman's books.

I've already suggested you read Whole Body Barefoot, but if you don't like the emphasis on transitioning to minimal footwear then Every Woman's Guide to Foot Pain Relief might be more your speed... or Simple Steps to Foot Pain Relief.  Her blog, Katy Says, is also chock-full of great articles... to the point where it can be a little overwhelming at first.  Pick a topic and dive in, or choose one of the books for a more bite-sized entry into the world of alignment.  And did I mention that Katy is very funny?  The reading won't be painful or boring, I promise.

The fitness subscription service Fit2B that I'm about to talk about also has a blog with lots of helpful resources and information as well.

7.  Subscribe to alignment focused fitness routines via Fit2B.

I'm so thankful I stumbled across Fit2B!  This fitness video subscription service has helped me make huge strides in becoming more body-aware, and strengthening my core.  Bethany, the CEO and instructor at Fit2B, approaches all fitness categories (from pilates, to kickboxing, to yoga, to step-aerobics) from an alignment perspective.  She especially emphasizes the effect (good OR bad) that alignment can have on a woman's healing body after childbirth, but the routines are great for non-moms as well.

Fit2B makes working out SO quick and simple with a wide range of workout lengths, from 7 minutes on up, and by texting fitness reminders, encouragement, and alignment tips to subscribers throughout the week.  I can click on a video link in a text and play it on my TV instantly using google chromecast (Amazon Firestick works the same way), which leaves very little room for procrastination or excuses!

It is a fantastic program, and I think it is only going to get better as Fit2B continues to grow as a company. I recently became an affiliate because I can rave about them in all honesty and sincerity, simply by sharing my experiences as a subscriber myself.

Well there you go!  I have now revealed the exciting weirdness of my shape-shifting feet (haha!), and shared the top tips I think have helped me along in my alignment journey thus far.

Please let me know if you have any questions!  I am still learning myself, but I will try to point you in the right direction.  And if you're a fellow alignment-nerd, be sure to say hello so we can bond over the joys of a neutral lumbar spine and proper weight-distribution!  ;)

The 5 Best Trader Joe's Products You've Never Heard of - Unusual, Delicious, and CHEAP!

Pop Quiz for Trader Joe's shoppers -- how many of these items can you identify at a glance? They're the 5 best Trader Joe's products that I'm pretty sure you haven't found yet... cheap, unusual, delicious, and fun items for you to try out on your next shopping trip! via Devastate BoredomMy husband and I are a little obsessed with Trader Joe's.  NOT in the mindless  "everything at Trader Joe's is HEALTHY!" kind of way, which is just silly, cuz those guys sell COOKIE BUTTER and there's no way anybody can pretend that spreading mushed-up cookies onto toast is healthy... but in the "hey, look at these fun organic and natural products that don't cost an arm and a leg!" way.

(ALSO Trader Joe's gets major points in my book for selling recycled paper products at pretty much the best price you can find.  Everybody switch to recycled toilet paper and napkins!  Let's kill fewer trees in the process of wiping our mouths and butts, people!  ;P)

Over the course of being avid Trader Joe's shoppers for the last five years or so, we've come across a number of unusual, extra tasty, and appealingly affordable items that aren't

Fantastic Product for People Who Love Essential Oils! Review of the Carrier Stick, Solid Base Oil / Moisturizer - Great Gift or Stocking Stuffer!

Carrier Stick, All Natural, Easy Essential Oil Base Application, reviewed by Devastate Boredom.

I don't know if you have noticed, but essential oils are SUCH a big deal right now.  Lots of people are responding to the growing awareness of how toxic many home and personal care items are (check out the Skin Deep database if you don't believe me!) and are flocking to essential oils for air freshening, home remedies for minor ailments, skincare, bug repellents, cleaning, and more.  I love it when trends actually fit with my green-lovin', minimalist lifestyle!  ;P  (linking to some examples, but there are soooo many resources out there if you're interested)

I've been dabbling in essential oils myself for about six months, mostly sticking to Aura Cacia's organic line, because once you start thinking about how much of an herb/plant has to be distilled down to get that little bottle of essence (read: A LOT), you might decide you aren't crazy about all those plants being saturated with neurotoxins...  *shudders*

TODAY ONLY - Flash Sale at Summerskin! (Not Really a Post, Just a, "Oh hey! Look!!") Stylish UPF/SPF clothing!

If you have been around here for very long you probably know that:

1) I am intensely sun-phobic -- the natural result of a) an OCD personality, b) very pale burn-able skin, and c) an early skin cancer diagnosis / removal when I was just barely in my 20s.  No, it was not melanoma thank God!  But they had to go back and remove more, I had to have stitches, etc, and it thoroughly scared young, impressionable me.

2) I am a huge fan of the UPF (fabric SPF) clothing line Summerskin.  It is a) a super cute and stylish clothing line of clothing, b) founded and owned by a woman -- go go female entrepreneurship!, and c) naturally designed to have a UPF (usually of 50, which is a very high level of protection), which means less time and annoyance struggling with sunscreen.

(can you tell I'm in a list-making mood?  :P)

If you didn't already know all that, and you're curious about it, feel free to check out my post about sun protection, sun damage, and my struggles with conventional vs natural sunscreen, and my recent post reviewing (/raving about) Summerskin's maxi, which I contend is the PERFECT travel dress.

Stylish UPF Clothing - Your Non-Gunky, No-Hassle Sun Protection Option! A Review of Summerskin's Minimalist-Style-Friendly, Fashionable SPF Maxi Dress

So, yesterday I shared with you all my long and difficult (*sob*) history with sunscreen — particularly the fact that most conventional sunscreens contain chemicals that have been flagged as likely carcinogens, and that natural sunscreens tend to feel like wearing mayonnaise. UGH!

As promised, I am here today to share the third and far less gunky option... clothing made out of fabric designed specifically to disrupt UV rays, either through the weave and material of the fabric, through specific types of dyes used in high concentrations (the color isn’t the important thing here, the type of dye is what makes the difference), or through additives embedded in the cloth.

At this point you might be asking, why go to all that trouble? OF COURSE you already wear clothes… Don’t they block the sun? Yes and no is the (annoying) answer… it depends a lot on the type of material as to how protected you are by the clothes you are wearing. In general though, an ordinary cotton shirt has a UPF (fabric equivalent of SPF) of about 5-8, meaning you are frequently still getting a hefty dose of UVA through your clothing, in all its cancer-and-aging-causing glory.

Now, if you have encountered UPF clothing in the past, you probably are feeling a little depressed by this idea, with visions of camping/hiking wear and rashguards dancing through your head.  Sure, those things serve important purposes, but aren't exactly something you’re going to wear from day to day.

Good news!! Style-conscious, comfy clothing with UPF DOES exist, and today we’re going to talk about my favorite brand, Summerskin

Sun Protection Dilemmas - My Experiences with Natural vs Conventional Sunscreen and the Much Less Gunky Third Option! PS Lipstick DOES Protect Your Lips from the Sun!

Oh the sun.  I have such a love/hate relationship with the sun.... on the one hand, gorgeous blue skies, sunny days, walks and hikes, meals on patios... on the other hand, all kinds of skin damage, including early aging and skin cancer.  *gulp*

As a very fair-skinned child, my mama raised me right to wear sunscreen!  And wear it I did, when I went to the pool or beach, or when I knew I was going to be outside for a while... I was the annoying kid at summer camp, pestering her cabin-mates to put sunscreen on her back.  By the time I was twenty, I was wearing sunscreen almost daily.  All good, right??  Go me.

BUT WAIT.... it's not so simple!  Over the past ten years or so, sunscreen has become so incredibly complicated and controversial, it's almost seems like a bad joke.  In fact, that sunscreen I was wearing so carefully through my childhood and adolescence contained almost no protection against UVA rays -- the most damaging rays -- at all.  Some sunscreens on the shelves of our bathrooms and stores still don't.  Additionally...

I Kissed a Beet and I Liked it... with before and after photos! Beet DIY Natural Lipstick!

Last week I mentioned my little romantic adventure with a beet, as well as how it was motivated by a Canadian Defense Group study on heavy metals commonly found in every.single.cosmetic.tested.  (Problematic?  Hell yes.)

However, I failed to take a "before" picture prior to smooching my vegetable friend, so it was hard to tell just how efficacious our little encounter really was.  I decided to remedy this today.

The "Before":

The "After":

So, a definite effect, but not a dramatic one.  More of a subtle "What? I always look this good..." look then a dramatic "out on the town or off to a business meeting, I haven't decided yet" look.

A commenter on the "MacGyver Your Makeup" post on ReadyMade suggests mixing beet powder (which apparently people take as a supplement?) with vegetable glycerin to create an actual lipstain, so I'll need to try that soon too.

A Day in the Life Of Me (aka, why should babies be the only ones whose lives are documented?)

Lately I've been trying to catch on up literally *years* of neglected scrapbooking.  I'm not the super artsy type of scrapbooker who spends hours meticulously cutting out and arranging photos in a frame-worthy composition (though I do have the scissors that cut those fancy little designs), but I enjoy having one central, ordered, and maybe even visually appealing place for photos, written memories, and bits of paper memorabilia.  My scrapbooking over the last few days has made me profoundly grateful for the people in my life and good memories I've accumulated;  I'm very blessed.

I've also been contemplating how my friends with babies are constantly documenting their lives, and how over the past few years I've hardly taken any photos at all.  In fact, due to this dearth of recent pictures, once I finish scrapbooking my camera-happy college experiences, my wedding will be almost the only thing left to memorialize... and amazing as it was, it's hardly been the only scrapbook-worthy memory of the past four years!

As a result, I resolved to be more deliberate about documenting my life. Unfortunately, I made this resolution rather late in the day yesterday, and I figured that nothing very document-able was likely to happen before bedtime.  Until I noticed how very pretty the peppers going into our dinner were... and so of course, I had to take a picture.

And once I took a picture of the peppers, why, it only made sense to take a picture of the curry I made with them...

For anyone confused, no, you do not make curry in a baking dish, but its a good place to store leftovers.

I used the oh-so-delicious Real Simple Curry-Coconut Sauce recipe, which I highly recommend... The rest of the stir-fry recipe also sounds delicious, but since I neither used meat nor any of the vegetables they mentioned, and I DID take the liberty of using lots of other vegetables and couscous instead, you can kind of take it or leave it as you want.

The sauce is the thing.

And while I was making that delicious dinner, chopping up the vegetables reminded me of a Ready Made magazine article about "homemade" cosmetics, in which the authors suggested kissing a beet as a stand-in for lipstick.  I'm a very literal person, and couldn't quite tell whether the writers were kidding or not, so I figured this was as good a time as any to give it a try.

So I kissed that beet.

(several times, for maximum effect)

This desire to suddenly lavish affection on vegetables wasn't merely motivated by my fervent love for them, but also by a report I read recently from the Canadian Environmental Defense group, in which they tested 49 different cosmetics and discovered lead, mercury, and/or other heavy metals in every.single.one.  American ladies, don't breath that sigh of relief quite yet because they weren't strictly Canadian cosmetics.. they were everything from L'Oreal to Benefit to Physician's Formula.

Care to join me in kissing beets?

Lastly, I discovered an adorably grumpy kitten snoozing in my dresser drawer, and while I wouldn't normally volunteer the locale for a cat-nap, it was definitely photo-worthy.

My life is apparently quite document-able after all.

Simplifying Life in the Kitchen: Handy Tools to Track Good Nutrition

Between the tighter budgets most people are on these days, the latest health and nutritional concerns, and organic considerations like the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen, there are probably a million things to juggle around in your head while making your shopping lists and getting ready to cook dinner.

I won't say I can make it simpler exactly, nor can I pop over to your house to help peel potatoes or clip coupons for you, but I can at least consolidate the tools to make it easier! In the coming week or two I'll be doing several posts highlighting my favorite food-related websites, and shortcuts to maximize each.

Part I: My favorite online tool for nutritional analysis
Part II: Handy sites for finding affordable local and organic options
Part III: Time-efficient resources for saving money on groceries

In the scope of life, nutritional choices that support health are a high priority, so an obvious first stop on this food-related expedition will be the nutritional tracking food pyramid site. It's a little labor intensive and less-than-cutting edge, sure, but this site tracks not only calories and fat intake, but everything else from calcium to potassium to fiber too. It even will show you a "nutritional balance" scale, to highlight whether your caloric intake is appropriate for your daily energy needs. There are plenty of other similar sites, but this is my favorite... partially because it's dated-ness provides some comedic relief in between the dreaded contemplations of calories and vitamins and fiber.

Try it out! Click on the link, go to "Pyramid Tracker" on the left sidebar, create an account and log in. Enter your best approximations of what you've eaten that day (sadly, the site doesn't understand the concept of a smoothie, so for things that aren't listed just try to break them down into their components... so in this case, strawberries and yogurt). Here's where you can make this easier on yourself for future entries -- once you find an item, say, "cereal," and it's something that you eat pretty regularly, go ahead and click "frequently used foods" and then "add". This way when you log back in next time, you can just go straight to your "frequently used" list for all your habitual food choices and not have to do as much searching. After a bit, it should look more or less like this:

When you're finished listing foods, click on "Select Quantity" and make your best guess as to how much of each you ate. At some point you might want to brush up on portion size comparisons like the ones here to make this a little easier. When you're finished, click on "Analyze" to see a break-down of suggested daily values for nearly all the possible vitamins and food groups, along with what you have consumed for each so far.

Once you've entered your food intake for the day, click on the "Physical Activity" link at the top of the page, toward the right. Do the condensed option, because the standard option is just ridiculously detailed... it expects you to enter every moment of your day, including the time you spend sleeping. Click around and enter any working out, walking, strenuous lifting, even the eight times up-and-down the steps doing laundry. Here's where it gets amusing, because the activity options include some pretty ludicrous stuff, including: "Standing, Casino Gambling," "Walking to and from an Outhouse," and "Butchering Animals." My best guess is that the system was originally derived from a very vintage source, but it still gives an accurate accounting of the calories expended by various activities so I figure it's all good.

After you've entered your physical activity for the day, click on the "Energy Balance" link next to "Physical Activity" and you can see how your daily food intake balances with your energy needs... It's pretty interesting, and a great visual!

Even if you can't spare the time to enter all that regularly (I certainly don't), the site is still an excellent way to occasionally double-check whether your nutritional bases are as covered as you think they are. Whether you end up patting yourself on the back or frowning at the display, it's still a great tool to have in your online garage! It works for me, and hopefully it might be handy for you too. :)
