But, for once, I got mad crafty! And it turned out just how I had hoped!
I started with an old graphic tee I'd had since college, that was really showing its age. I couldn't bear the thought of throwing it away, despite it's stains and wear, so I held on to it and started trying to think how I could repurpose it.
Enter this free bag from Summerskin. Though I love Summerskin and their fantastic fashionable UPF clothing (check out my review of their fantastic maxi here... it's the only travel dress you'll ever want!), I didn't really want to carry around an advertisement every day.
Cue lightbulb!
I cut the graphic off the tee, and centered it on the bag. I pinned it down and hand-stitched it on while watching TV. It only took about two episodes of Downton Abbey to get it done, but if you have a sewing machine this project will be done in a jiffy! I daresay you could even use fabric glue for equivalent results in the blink of an eye, but I didn't want to risk distorting my Mighty Mouse and I don't mind sewing, so I opted for the longer route.
Recycle an Old Graphic Tee into a Fashionable Accessory! Easy DIY craft adventure, Mighty Mouse style!! https://t.co/cQPYD9cWzB— Sarah Eliza (@REALsaraheliza) August 22, 2016
I kind of love the result!
My Mighty Mouse gets a second life post shirt-hood, and I get bonus points for being crafty and reusing / recycling. Win!! ;P
Easiest DIY ever.
I have a Wonder Woman shirt that's going to need a reincarnation soon too... anybody got another cool idea for what her second life should be??
PS: A quick note while I'm thinking about it, for if you do use fabric glue... make sure to test it on some similar fabric you're not invested in beforehand. Also, when you glue the actual image onto the tote bag, stick some cardboard inside the bag so you don't, you know, glue it shut... I may or may not speak from previous experience.

You are a girl after my repurposing heart Sarah Eliza! Love what you did with the t-shirt and it was very smart of you to sew it if you want it to last. Pinning!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh thanks Mary! I'm definitely bringing this one to your link-up next week... one of the first times I'll have an actual craft type post. ;P
DeleteHow fun! It's so funny, I saw this post on a link party and almost clicked on it, but got distracted and didn't. i NEVER would have suspected it was yours, though! :P I took all my old t-shirts from high school and turned them into a double-sided quilt. I have plans to do the same with all my old skating competition sweatshirts, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. :D
ReplyDeleteYea, not usual for me, right? ;P Love the sound of your quilt Lisa!
DeleteGreat job! I have a "Martha (Stewart) is my homeboy" that I would love to turn into a bag.
ReplyDeleteAhhhhh that shirt sounds AMAZING. :P Love it!
DeleteThis is such a great idea! I which I had thought of doing this to some of my old college T-shirts before I got rid of them. Really great idea though. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteAw man! Next time!! ;) Thanks for coming by Melissa!
DeleteLol, glue it shut! I've painted shirts shut before too!
ReplyDeleteLove Might Mouse! He makes a "mighty" fine tote bag!
Congrats on your pinterest worthy craft!!
Thanks Melinda! Same here, haha, I learned the hard way. ;P
DeleteClever idea! Such a great way to re-purpose an old t-shirt AND a tote that might never have been used. Thank you for sharing on Family Joy Blog Link-Up Party. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I was happy with how it turned out. :D
DeleteI love this - it looks so striking! I'm tempted to give it a go with a couple of t-shirts I'm struggling to accept I'll never get into again (darn bust, lol). x
ReplyDeleteThanks Jessica! Do it, and then send me pics of how it turns out! ;)
DeleteLOVE IT! This could also be a great way to jazz up the boring reusable grocery bags I have with all different store names on them.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, Audrey! I have a ton of those bags too and they're SO boring...
DeleteOh wow how fab! Love this idea! I have tons of old baby clothes that I can't bear to throw away. I plan on making a patchwork quilt with them. So how about a Wonder Woman cushion? You could do the same sort of idea to the bag? Oh and you're totally speaking from experience re the glue incident right?!
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of the cushion! Brilliant. :) And ahahaha how did you guess about the glue? *innocent*
DeleteWhat a great idea that looks so cool, t-shirt to tote.

What a CUTE solution for saving a favorite T-Shirt! For your Wonder Woman, you might sew the logo onto a tank and keep wearing it! ;-) Thanks for sharing at Tuesdays with a Twist! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
ReplyDeleteThat's actually a really fun idea, Marci! I just might do that... excited!
DeleteOh, super cute idea. I know my daughter has logo t-shirts a bit worn out she'd love to upcycle onto a bag. Thanks for sharing at the #InspirationSpotlight Pinned & sharing
ReplyDeleteSuch a great DIY for recycling an old t-shirt! Looks so cute!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! You got to reuse a favorite t-shirt, cover up an emblem and dress up the tote. It looks great! I think sewing it down will make it last longer.
