Capsule Wardrobe Layering Ideas + Great Dresses at a STEAL!

Good news!  I've gotten started with a couple of part-time tutoring agencies... yay for a job!  However, it all happened pretty quick, so I'm scrambling to get all my ducks in a row and figure out my schedule, etc.  In the meantime, here is a collection I had already put together -- great dresses at a STEAL!  All of these choices are $50 or less... many are on sale, so check 'em out quick before they sell out!

Here are some style tips for dresses in a Capsule Wardrobe:

  • Dresses can play an important role in a Capsule Wardrobe when you're balancing your bases -- a dress in one of your "family of neutrals" colors can provide a whole new look for layering tops, sweaters, etc.

  • A dress can also be a fun way to introduce a new color into your capsule without having to rearrange the core of your mix-and-match options -- a brightly-colored dress can work especially well if you have some neutral tops to combine it with, but also can just be a fun touch alone.

  • Always shop for flexibility in a range of circumstances, and avoid buying looks you already own!  Try out a dress in a new silhouette, and see all the fun options it adds to your existing favorites.

  • Remember that layering options for dresses not only include the obvious (like sweaters, blazers, vests), but also button-down tops worn open, or lots of combinations of blouses, tunics, and t-shirts worn over the dress.  Functionally speaking, this turns the dress into a smooth and seamless skirt -- a brand-new look!  You can also change things up simply by varying your jewelry, scarves, shoes, etc.  We tend to get stuck in habits of wearing one dress with one particular sweater, or one particular necklace, which can quickly lead to boredom within our wardrobe.  Try out a combination that doesn't seem intuitive to you -- it might just be your new favorite outfit!

    1. Ahhhh you're hilarious! I wear so many long stretchy skirts and dresses because they're basically MORE comfy than jeans... the comfort factor in jersey is HUGE! I swear you can branch out and still be comfy... I swear! :P

  9. I agree that dresses and skirts are way more comfy than jeans - I always felt like I was getting away with wearing shorts to work when I had them on. I love dresses - I could buy them all the time, but my mom would always tell me "no dresses because they can only be worn by themselves and it's better to mix and match." Well, now I can tell her that they CAN still be layered!

  13. I thrilled you joined us on I am Pinnable and I really need to start wearing dresses again - being top heavy I tend to avoid them as I am a 12 on top but a 8 on the bottom !
