This is just a brief post ("Brief?" you whisper to one another when you think I'm not watching, "CAN she be brief?" ;P) to share some free printables I've been enjoying lately, and the rental-friendly nails-free hack I've used to hang them.
My husband and I are in a season of life that involves a lot of moving, and will likely continue to involve moves for another couple of years (oh me...), so printables are perfect for adding to our decor in a non-permanent, non-bulky-for-packing kind of way. While some of you in a more settled stage of life might look askance at my method of hanging them, it's perfect for a rental or dorm room where you don't want to leave a lot of nail marks, and would also be handy for testing out a gallery wall arrangement for a period of time before commencing with the hammering.
The hack is simple -- use masking tape to create a psuedo-frame around the item to be hung. I left the edges hanging off because I liked that look, but you could also cut it more precisely for a cleaner look.
It works great! No falling down, even with the huge poster you see above, and no nail damage. Perfect for a rental, a dorm room, etc. Here the lighter colored standard masking tape works nicely because of the contrast with the dark walls.
Below is our "coffee nook" (yes, our current kitchen backsplash is basically a mirror... weird huh?) decorated with the awesome "but first, coffee" printable from Chicfetti, which I found originally through the Goddess of Printables, Vanessa at Little Gold Pixel. I had it in my head that I wanted to hang this one with black masking tape, but according to the people at Target and Home Depot, there was no such thing in existence. Amazon thought otherwise though -- black masking tape there is only $4.46 with free prime shipping! I'll clearly be updating this post soon with a black tape boarder. ;P They also have a slightly fancier black "artist tape", for $8.75.

As a side note, you can apparently do all kinds of awesome things with black masking tape in isolation too... I wish I had been this cool as a college student!

How cool. Fun and they don't ruin the walls. That totally rocks.

Thanks sooo much for the compliments, and the feature!!
Hey, would duct tape be too heavy and pull off the paint?
You are 1 clever girl! I know about blue painter's tape....
Awww, super sweet of you Melinda! :) You deserved it!!
DeleteI wouldn't try duct tape, I think it would leave a sticky residue if it didn't pull off the paint. Masking tape / painters tape seems safer.
I love these! I need to print the one that says 'good days start with coffee and you' - my husband always jokes that I love coffee more than love him ;)
ReplyDeleteSo funny! :P Glad you like them!
DeleteWe've always lived in rentals, and using either masking tape, painter's tape, or washi tape (or some combination) to hang up my decor is the best! I have a big map I'm planning to hang up with tape this weekend--I usually do something like put the masking tape at the back and then use washi tape as a frame, or for the corners.
ReplyDeleteRachel, you are BRILLIANT. I don't know why I hadn't thought to use the tape as part of the decor, cuz it seems so simple and genius... I was always a tape-roller myself (you know, roll it up and stick it on the back, haha). I have ton of washi tape too, so I will have to see what I can do with this new inspiration! :)
DeleteSo many beautiful signs about coffee. Which I love so much that it was one of my 1 year old's first words...
ReplyDeleteReally?? That's hilarious and adorable and awesome! :P
DeleteI love those coffee printables!
