It's been a while since I've done a music-focused Monday Media Madness post!!  I had NOTHING planned for today (Nanowrimo brain over here *crazy eyes* 37,599 words people!!) so I was psyched when I found out that Amazon is currently offering the Foo Fighters' Saint Cecilia EP for free download!!  Yay, free music, and yay, easy quick post!  ;P

Free Classical Music BONANZA from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Bach, Beethovan, Dvorak, Mozart, Ravel, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff - Hundreds of Legal Downloads and MP3s

Wow, have I got a PLETHORA of free-and-legal classical music for you today!  The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston is apparently an incredibly generous institution, as they have what appears to be hundreds of MP3s available for free download.

You can search the collection by artist who performed it, by the composer, by genre, or by period.  This is a wonderful resource for anyone who enjoys classical music, as well as for music teachers!

To give you an idea of what's available....  there are

I really like Brandi Carlile so I'm psyched about that one!  Her song The Story from the album of the same name is one of my favorites... see below.

Free Music Monday -- Sacred Harp Selection! Blues Pioneer Sampler Album - Bill Landford, Leroy Carr, more! Legal Mp3s

This is a quick Free Music Monday today, as I am also posting a Media Monday book review post, whaaaaaat!  ;P  BUT we do have a fun download this week, so let's get to it!

Google play is offering a free album download called Blues Pioneers -- a collection of vintage recordings of blues standards, including Bill Landford,  Leroy Carr, The Blue Chips, Blind Boy Fuller, Mamie Smith, and more!  This wonderful collection is a great intro into old-timey blues, and a fun "blast from the past" for anyone who enjoys groundbreaking, historical, awesome music.

The Sacred Harp track has a dear place in my heart -- I love shape note singing!  It is communal singing at its finest, and loudest... it is simultaneously earthy and deeply spiritually... it's hard to describe, but the word often used to describe it is "rousing."  ;P  If you aren't sure what I'm talking about, the best mainstream media example I know of is from the movie Cold Mountain...

This is a real-people, real-life example... note that the first 40 seconds or so, they are not singing words, they are singing the notes to establish the melody before adding in the lyrics.  This is Sacred Harp 277, Antioch, I Know That My Redeemer Lives.

I won't try to go any further into the rich history of Sacred Harp / shape note singing (after all... I claimed this was going to be a short post... ha!) but there is a wonderful documentary called Awake, My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp if you are interested.   And either way, you can enjoy a shape note download of your very own, along with some other wonderful blues downloads, courtesy of Google Play today.  ;)

This week we have a really wonderful free album download, from the renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma!  The Sound of Yo-Yo Ma features eight tracks, including the breathtaking Meditation from Thais (if you don't know it by name you'll recognize it when you hear it... either that or you've been living under a rock all your life... come out from under the rock!  The sun is out, and there is beautiful music to be had for FREE!), Dona Nobis Pacem, and Ave Maria, along with five other classical pieces featuring the cello.

Free Music for Focus & Contemplation - Steve Roach, Hearts of Space, Celtic, David Arkenstone, more, all legal! PLUS Country!

Bogged down by everything you have to do?  Here's some new music to perk us up!

Since I've been trying to focus in on writing lately, this week I was drawn to look for instrumental, wordless music, that would be a nice background for curbing my ADHD while not boring me to tears.  I present to you, free music for focus and contemplation!  So to start... Celtic is always fun! 

This collection, Green Hill Celtic Music Sampler 2014, features music from David Arkenstone, David Davidson (self-centered much, parents of David Davidson? You named your child after your own last name...), John Mock, Cynthia Wyatt, and Craig Duncan.  If you like this kind of thing, you should check out my favorite all-time Celtic instrumental album - Jeff Victor's Scottish Moors - not free, but oh-so pretty.

I'm probably most excited about this awesome collection of new age space electronica ambient music (so hard to describe!  I'll just keep stringing words together...), called The Hues of Infinity.  If you've ever listened to the NPR program Hearts of Space, this will be your cup of tea!  In fact, Steve Roach, who is included in this compilation, has been featured on the program many times.  LOVE his music (this is a great example) and it's almost never free!

Oooh this freebie fits perfectly with this post topic too!  Mindful Guitar (Slow Guitar for Focus & Meditation) from Inner Harmonies -- I would call this, "classical guitar meets new age melodies".  Very soothing!

Less my style but worth mentioning, an hour long album of ocean sounds.  I prefer melody mixed in with my nature sounds, something this app kindly provides:  Relax Melodies app.  You can mix and match sounds (everything from "ocean" to "wind chime" to "breeze") along with snippets of melody that play on loop.  It is currently free as well, hurray! 

My streaming choice for this week is the free album and program available on the Hearts of Space website -- I had kind of forgotten how much I love this style of "electric space ambient music" so I'm excited to rediscover it.  They also have their weekly program available to stream for free every Sunday, so be sure to set an alert on your calendar if you want to tune in for that!  More extensive streaming is available by subscription.

All right now, enough internet browsing.  Go play your new music and focus!  :)

PS  This doesn't fit the topic AT ALL but I never know how long free stuff will stay free, so tacking it on just the same -- google play currently has a free sampler album of Country Hits available.  Be sure to click "free" and not "subscribe for free" which will sign you up for their music service.  I don't know if it is any good... because I don't listen to country... but if you do, let me know what you think!  ;P

Wow, some of you have waited a while for a new FREE MP3 Musical Madness post!  I appreciate your (involuntary) patience.  ;)  I have to be honest though, my relationship with music has evolved somewhat over the past few years... I recently found myself with a collection of almost 10,000 MP3s, and instead of that being awesome, it was kind of weighing me down.  I could never just hit shuffle and be sure of hearing stuff I liked... never just load random stuff on my iPod for a jog without saying "wtf is that noise" at least once... it was rough guys, really rough. *coughfirstworldproblemscough*

So I did a massive overhaul of my music collection -- I literally listened to every single track in my library and it took FOREVER -- and decided what I enjoyed and what had to go.  It has made for a much cleaner, happier musical experience.  I hope to keep posting free-and-legal downloads on a regular basis going forward, but I'm going to be more choosy about what I keep for good, and I encourage you to do the same.  Don't get bogged down by too much of a good thing!  

I also will be posting free stuff that is available streaming (because when are we NOT online?) and  posting reviews/recommendations of groups and albums whether or not they have free downloads, because if something's really good, it's worth paying for on occasion!

All that out of the way, here are some goodies for this week:

A free Macklemore download?  Um, YES PLEASE!  Cue the "awwwww," this track was dedicated to his unborn daughter.  I love that Macklemore is a Hip Hop artist with both a sense of humor and a social conscience.  If you know more like him, please comment with recommendations! His album The Heistis my favorite "jogging" music... well worth the purchase!

The Language Of My Worldis also fantastic.  Note: Pay attention to clean vs explicit when downloading if you are sensitive to language.
 
Maybe because I recently had a seismic move to a new city/state, but I've been craving hymns lately (if you're not a person of faith feel free to skip this paragraph, I won't be offended)... not the kind with the plodding funeral march beat, more Joy Beyond The Sorrow: Indelible Grace VI style.  Loving this free sampler New Old Hymns on Noisetrade!  Well, love the first three tracks from Feast or Fallow and The Builder and the Architect (the last one isn't my favorite).  Great music for contemplation or encouragement, or in my case, grounding.  Heck y'all, I've been a bit of a mess since we moved...

Also, downloads previewing the Rendezvous Music festival (Sept 11th and 12th if you're going to be in Colorado!), including Indigo Girls, Holly Williams, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, Ivory Layne, John Oates, and Kylie Rae Harris.  Mostly singer-songwriter, Americana, mildly country type tracks.  My favorites are Tightrope by Drew Holcomb and Disappointed by Ivory Layne... Ivory Lane reminds me veeery slightly of Regina Spektor, only slightly more pop?  Let me know if you disagree...

Streaming pick for this week:  Big Sis by Sales.  Not sure what the lyrics are about, but the dreamy vocals and strong guitar melody are really gorgeous.  You can hear it and other tracks on their website, perversely named wearenotsales.com.  Sure you aren't, guys, sure you aren't.  ;P

iTunes is also offering a great free sampler from the music festival Lollapalooza on their facebook page (facebook seems to be where it's at for free music today), so snag that for 15 tracks from My Morning Jacket, Bright Eyes, Skylar Gray, Best Coast, and Explosions in the Sky, to name a few.  My code said that it expired September 30th, so theoretically this sampler is available until then.... but why wait??  Download it now, and spend today rockin' out.

Monday MP3 Madness: Free-and-Legal Downloads from Mindi Abair and Nathan Pacheco

Ok, for some reason Campbell's Soup "Labels for Education" likes to give away free music -- I think I posted back a while ago about the downloads they had available (music from Kate & Kacey and Crosby Loggins, still available btw) but they have a couple new ones now:

"L'Esprit Nouveau" from Mindi Abair
"Tribute" from Nathan Pacheco

Somewhat confusingly, the Mindi Abair download is an almost entirely instrumental, jazzy saxophone piece.  The Nathan Pacheco download is actually really cool, a solo vocalist piece in Italian with an orchestra behind (I might be wrong about it being Italian... and honestly it might not be a full orchestra, but that's the impression it gives), so if you like that kind of thing totally pick it up.  Nathan Pacheco's song also might have something to do with Yanni, because once you get the Mp3 into your player the label is "Yanni/Nathan Pacheco" so maybe its... a tribute to Yanni?  Sheesh Labels for Education, way to be cryptic with your free downloads here...

Teen Wolf (I guess we should have seen this coming, what with the whole Edward vs Jacob thing.   Now we have a teen werewolf show to balance out Vampire Diaries, courtesy of MTV.  At least they seem to have no pretenses about the situation...)

Happy Memorial Day!  Let's start the week off right with some free music!

First, if you have kids then you might want to celebrate the day with five free downloads from Hector's Favorite Patriotic Songs for Kids.  You'll find "America the Beautiful," "Old Chisholm Valley," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Red River Valley" and "The Yellow Rose of Texas." Call me a patriotic music purist if you must, but IMO, only two of those are actually patriotic... the other three should really just be part of Hector's Favorite Old Songs instead.  And if you're wondering who Hector is, I can't really answer that, besides the fact that he's one of the Countdown Kids.  Who appear to be... animated singing sensations?

Next, if you're a fan of American Idol then you may have already heard of these guys because they apparently made an appearance there, but Il Volo is new to me... as is the concept of "Pop Opera," which is how some people are describing their style of music.  Though honestly, they just sound like Josh Groban, if Josh Groban were three lovable Italian adolescents... not that that is anything to complain about!  Anyway, the point -- there's a free track of Il Volo singing "O Sole Mio" on their website right now, and you should definitely download it.  It is very pretty, buttery and romantic, and just begging to be played while you dance passionately on a patio overlooking a river somewhere, while a candlelight dinner lays neglected in the background.


In other good news, if you like to pick-and-choose your free music then this one is for you;  filling out a survey for Land of Frost lunchmeat will get you a free music download of your choice from the Universal Music label.  Which is basically, Taylor Swift, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Anberlin, 3 Doors Down, Jay-Z, Owl City, and a lot of people in between, as well as a wide variety of world music and various soundtracks.  Your biggest problem will probably be choosing just one.  


Yay free music!  Download and enjoy, your iPod can thank me later.

iTunes Free Music Madness... Emmylou Harris, Ray Orbison, An Horse, Jarabe del Palo and more!

Is the download you're looking for no longer available?  :(  Free-and-legal tracks are often offered only temporarily, so I'm sorry if you have missed the window for this one.  Look to the right to subscribe via email, feed reader, blogloving, twitter, etc, and I'll make sure that you never miss out on free music again!

Apparently I have been WAYYY out of the loop, because all of the sudden in addition to their Song of the Week, Discovery Download, and Cancion de la Semana, iTunes also has an "Indie Spotlight" and something simply called "Free Song" (haha). Some fun stuff this week, check it out!

Song of the Week: "Dressed Sharply" -- An Horse (the biggest thing that stands out to me about this one is the stupid deliberate typo in their band name...)
Discovery Download: "Grass" by Black Ryder (according to the comments, this style of music treats the voice as just another instrument. So... you're not supposed to be able to understand the lyrics? Not sure why they would bother to have them then, though for all we know maybe the singer is just going "oooooh ahhhhhhhh ohhhhhh ahhhh" in tune with the music)
Free Song: "New Orleans" -- Emmylou Harris (my favorite this week)
Indie Spotlight: "County Line" -- Cass McCombs
Free Video: "Oh Pretty Woman" -- Ray Orbison (yeah, as in, the classic!)
Latin Single: "Para Enredar" -- Jarabe del Palo (Fun! Especially because here and there I can actually understand the lyrics...)
