Coffee Nook Free Printables + Rental and Dorm Friendly Wall Hanging Hack - Decorating With Masking Tape!

Round Up of Free Coffee-Nook Printables + Nails-Free Decorating Hack - Masking Tape! Rental and Dorm Friendly, via Devastate Boredom

This is just a brief post ("Brief?" you whisper to one another when you think I'm not watching, "CAN she be brief?" ;P) to share some free printables I've been enjoying lately, and the rental-friendly nails-free hack I've used to hang them.

My husband and I are in a season of life that involves a lot of moving, and will likely continue to involve moves for another couple of years (oh me...), so printables are perfect for adding to our decor in a non-permanent, non-bulky-for-packing kind of way.  While some of you in a more settled stage of life might look askance at my method of hanging them, it's perfect for a rental or dorm room where you don't want to leave a lot of nail marks, and would also be handy for testing out a gallery wall arrangement for a period of time before commencing with the hammering.

The hack is simple -- use masking tape to create a psuedo-frame around the item to be hung.  I left the edges hanging off because I liked that look, but you could also cut it more precisely for a cleaner look.

Nails-Free Decorating Hack - Masking Tape! Rental and Dorm Friendly + Round Up of Free Coffee-Nook Printables,! via Devastate Boredom

It works great!  No falling down, even with the huge poster you see above, and no nail damage.  Perfect for a rental, a dorm room, etc.  Here the lighter colored standard masking tape works nicely because of the contrast with the dark walls.

Below is our "coffee nook" (yes, our current kitchen backsplash is basically a mirror... weird huh?) decorated with the awesome "but first, coffee" printable from Chicfetti, which I found originally through the Goddess of Printables, Vanessa at Little Gold Pixel.  I had it in my head that I wanted to hang this one with black masking tape, but according to the people at Target and Home Depot, there was no such thing in existence.  Amazon thought otherwise though -- black masking tape there is only $4.46 with free prime shipping!  I'll clearly be updating this post soon with a black tape boarder.  ;P  They also have a slightly fancier black "artist tape", for $8.75.

This printable makes me happy!  And because of the simple way I've displayed it, it is also easily interchangeable... lucky thing too!  Because there are a ton of other awesome options out there, and I like to keep things fresh.  Click through to see a few of my other favorite coffee-related free printables that will likely soon be in rotation...

Part 5, Balancing Our Base Items, aka, The Capsule Wardrobe Secret No One Is Telling You!

Want to know how a Capsule Wardrobe can work for you, and never get boring? Check out this step-by-step guide -- Top Secret-- balance your bases! What is balancing bases? Find your personal style and the fashion advice you need for a confident, minimalist, curated closet here! via Devastate Boredom

Wow, what a journey we've had so far!  Over the past few weeks together you've determined your personal style, kicked out of your closet all of those freeloading clothing items that (for whatever reason) weren't getting worn, segmented out the ones that you need to keep but don't use on a regular basis, decided which colors to build your wardrobe around, and even experimented with being adventurous in your outfit pairings.  Way to go you!

Now we're going to look at how to flesh out this "capsule minimalist wardrobe" thing, in order to give yourself the most mix-and-match options with the least amount of actual items of clothing.  We're not looking for volume here!  A crowded closet is NOT our aim.

Our goal is to fill in the gaps in your closet strategically, so you can maximize all the other gorgeous things you already own.

There are two questions that will aid us in this quest...

1.  Where is my wardrobe the "lightest"?  I mostly mean for you to consider bases here (dresses that can be layered, skirts, pants, shorts, etc), but if your bases are already balanced you can always do this exercise with tops instead...  Do you have six pairs of jeans but no pants in neutral colors?  Are all your base pieces the same color?  Do you not have any layering dresses at all?  Our goal is to balance out our bases to provide you with a more flexible collection of "looks."  Ideally, you should have a roughly equivalent numbers of dresses, skirts, pants, etc, with different silhouettes or colors within each type.

If you're with me so far, skip to the graph below.  If you're having trouble getting your mind around this, you're probably going to need to do some more counting.  ;P  I know, I know, I'm sorry!  But this will help if you're stuck, I promise.  Stand in your closet and jot down a list of your layer-friendly dresses, short skirts, long skirts, shorts, capris, jeans and pants, noting how many you have of each, cut, color etc.

The Zombie Squad boasts thirteen zombie-kills.

Should I be impressed by that, or just concerned about the level of zombie-occupation I was hitherto unaware of?

And for this one, I have no idea who put this sign up, or what it means... it just says "Dead White Zombies" on the side of a warehouse type building.  And I thought it was totally creepy, so I took a picture.

Don't go in there guys, it isn't worth the risk!!  Definitely calling in the Zombie Hunters for this one.

Stylish UPF Clothing - Your Non-Gunky, No-Hassle Sun Protection Option! A Review of Summerskin's Minimalist-Style-Friendly, Fashionable SPF Maxi Dress

So, yesterday I shared with you all my long and difficult (*sob*) history with sunscreen — particularly the fact that most conventional sunscreens contain chemicals that have been flagged as likely carcinogens, and that natural sunscreens tend to feel like wearing mayonnaise. UGH!

As promised, I am here today to share the third and far less gunky option... clothing made out of fabric designed specifically to disrupt UV rays, either through the weave and material of the fabric, through specific types of dyes used in high concentrations (the color isn’t the important thing here, the type of dye is what makes the difference), or through additives embedded in the cloth.

At this point you might be asking, why go to all that trouble? OF COURSE you already wear clothes… Don’t they block the sun? Yes and no is the (annoying) answer… it depends a lot on the type of material as to how protected you are by the clothes you are wearing. In general though, an ordinary cotton shirt has a UPF (fabric equivalent of SPF) of about 5-8, meaning you are frequently still getting a hefty dose of UVA through your clothing, in all its cancer-and-aging-causing glory.

Now, if you have encountered UPF clothing in the past, you probably are feeling a little depressed by this idea, with visions of camping/hiking wear and rashguards dancing through your head.  Sure, those things serve important purposes, but aren't exactly something you’re going to wear from day to day.

Good news!! Style-conscious, comfy clothing with UPF DOES exist, and today we’re going to talk about my favorite brand, Summerskin

Sun Protection Dilemmas - My Experiences with Natural vs Conventional Sunscreen and the Much Less Gunky Third Option! PS Lipstick DOES Protect Your Lips from the Sun!

Oh the sun.  I have such a love/hate relationship with the sun.... on the one hand, gorgeous blue skies, sunny days, walks and hikes, meals on patios... on the other hand, all kinds of skin damage, including early aging and skin cancer.  *gulp*

As a very fair-skinned child, my mama raised me right to wear sunscreen!  And wear it I did, when I went to the pool or beach, or when I knew I was going to be outside for a while... I was the annoying kid at summer camp, pestering her cabin-mates to put sunscreen on her back.  By the time I was twenty, I was wearing sunscreen almost daily.  All good, right??  Go me.

BUT WAIT.... it's not so simple!  Over the past ten years or so, sunscreen has become so incredibly complicated and controversial, it's almost seems like a bad joke.  In fact, that sunscreen I was wearing so carefully through my childhood and adolescence contained almost no protection against UVA rays -- the most damaging rays -- at all.  Some sunscreens on the shelves of our bathrooms and stores still don't.  Additionally...

Part 1: Finding Your Style!
Part 2: The Winnowing Phase
Part 3: The Importance of Color in a Capsule Wardrobe

Minimalist Style for the Rest of Us --
Part 4, Be Adventurous!  How to Use a Mix-and-Match Fashion Show + Look Book to Achieve a Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe That Isn't Boring!

Welcome back!  It's been an exciting fa-SHUN journey so far... already you have determined several key characteristics of your style, AND chosen which colors you will build your capsule wardrobe around, AND figured out which pieces you love and which are on probation.  Most of your wardrobe is probably on probation, but don't let that discourage you!  Some of these pieces will probably work great in your minimalist capsule wardrobe, you just have to figure out which ones fit together into a look that you love, and which ones aren't worth the space in your closet.  Our key word is still "minimal", right?  Which means your goal is to keep whittling down your clothing collection until each piece is maximized and valuable!  BUT we still want to be adventurous with what we wear, and part of that is finding some clothing combinations you might not have initially thought to put together.  This post is all about one way you can test out which pieces deserve a place in your happy closet, and which ones should be passed on to somebody else -- via a Fashion Show!  ;P

For this process, it will work best if you have another set of eyes.  These CAN belong to your significant other, but it will be better if they belong to a friend instead, since people tend to be fairly invested in "looking good" for their significant others... and right now isn't about them and what they like, its about what you like.  The friend you ask for help doesn't have to have the same style preferences as you, but s/he does need to be able to tell you if an outfit "works," so try to ask a friend whose sense of style you respect.  Be sure to communicate what style "look" you're going for, and remind your friend that you aren't asking if she would wear the outfit herself, you're asking if the pieces combine well.

This friend needs to be armed with a camera, and take a full-length photo of you in each outfit you try.  If a friend isn't available, use the timer function on a camera to take the photos instead.  Either way, you want photos so that you can decide objectively yourself later whether to keep or pitch the "probationary" items, because if you love how an outfit looks and makes you feel, it honestly doesn't matter what your friend or spouse says... yours is the opinion that counts!  As a bonus, the happier and more confident you feel in what you're wearing, the more attractive you will appear.  Being able to look back afterwards at all the outfits you have tried, from a distance and in the context of other cute outfits, will help immensely in deciding what you think about them.

Your Assignment:
  • Start by gathering your "base pieces" -- pants, jeans, shorts, skirts, dresses.
  • Be methodical!  Either try one top with all possible base combinations, or try a base with all possible tops, whichever approach makes more sense to you.  This will keep your photos orderly when you are comparing looks later.
  • Be adventurous!  Try wearing a button-down dress open over another dress!  Try wearing a long skirt over a shorter dress!  Try a collared shirt under that sweater, or over that dress!  Combine different textures!  ETC. (See below for a pinterest board of the kind of "adventurousness" I'm describing here...)
  • Mix-and-match away, catwalkin' it up for your extra pair of eyes and/or camera.  Remember, you want a picture of each and every outfit!

Don't forget to include belts, shoes, scarves, jewelry, etc, in your catwalk outfit.  You may even end up with multiple pictures of the exact same outfit, but with a different belts or scarves or whatever accessorizing each one... that's perfect!  I realized after going through this process that I had one belt that looked terrible on my body-type no matter what I paired it with.  I similarly got rid of multiple shirts that looked fine on the hanger but just didn't work on me, and discovered a lot of new outfit "pairings" that I just hadn't thought to combine before.

After you're finished with your mix-and-match fashion show, go through all the photos on a computer and decide what you think about each.  Does it work?  Is it just kind of "meh"?  I recommend using a computer rather than a phone because the photos will be easier to see, and you can compare outfits next to one another if it is helpful.

Delete the photos of outfits you don't like, and print or save the photos you do to create a "look book" to remind you of your outfit possibilities going forward.  Don't forget to go ahead and donate any items of clothing you've now ruled out altogether as a result... if it isn't in the look book, it doesn't need to be in your closet.

So, in a nutshell...

4 Simple Steps to Discovering Your Capsule Wardrobe:
1.  Try on EVERY outfit combination you can make, out of what is in your closet.
2.  Take pictures of EVERY combination.
3.  Go back through the pictures on your computer and look at each outfit combination.
4.  Delete the photos you don't like, and print or save the photos you do like to create a "look book" to remind you of your outfit possibilities going forward.  Donate the clothing you've ruled out.

Disclaimer:  This is definitely the "slightly OCD" / "I have a little time on my hands" way to do this.  The "totally not OCD over here, feeling sorry for you right now Sarah Eliza" / "NO time to spare, are you kidding?" approach would be to just start pairing tops with bottoms, and give it a quick eyeball before heading out of the house to decide if the pieces are earning their keep or need to head for the donation pile after you get home that night.  However, doing it all at once does mean it is DONE and then you can start benefitting from the ease of your capsule wardrobe right away, rather than continuing to fine-tune over a prolonged period.  Also, trying out outfits in the privacy of your own home, with a friend to offer opinions and encouragement, can allow you more space for experimentation and self-expression than you might usually allow yourself if you're in a rush, headed for work, etc.

Either way, remember you are curating a collection of clothing that you enjoy, and that makes you feel confident and happy.  :)

Up next week, the secret to having an effective, easy capsule wardrobe!  In which you also discover that I am NOT an artist.  ;P  I hope you will join us for the fun... if you haven't already, please consider looking to the right sidebar and subscribing via email, bloglovin', twitter, or your other favorite bloggy source.  :)

For some fa-SHUN inspiration along the lines of "be adventurous!!", check out this pinterest board I created...  These outfits aren't all my style and they're probably not all yours either, but rather they're meant to give you ideas on how to layer and combine clothing you might not normally think about.  I tried to include a range of fashion styles and looks to help jump-start your wardrobe brainstorming.  Look at them not as outfits to copy verbatim, but instead in the spirit of "how could I modify this to suit me?"  Enjoy browsing -- I will continue to add more fun ideas as I find them!

Amy Schumer's Trainwreck -In Which LeBron James Watches Downton Abbey and A Cheerleading Routine Wins Your Man Back - A Movie Review

My husband and I saw Amy Schumer's new (well, not so new any more) movie Trainwreck last weekend, and we found ourselves talking about it picking it apart for a day or two afterwards... so I decided that enough thought had been involved to justify a quick review.  ;P  Here's a summary of my ponderings, but beware, lots of spoilers!!

Trainwreck Pros:

  • It's funny.  We enjoyed watching it and laughed a good bit throughout the film.  The "wait, that's so annoying that such-and-such happened" mostly came to mind after we finished viewing.
  • It's sweet.  There are plenty of endearing "aww" moments where you can squeeze your sweetie's hand and feel sentimental.
  • LeBron James.  SO funny.  Playing himself as adorably chivalrous and comically cheap at the same time, I can see why critics called him Judd Apatow's "secret weapon" for the film.
  • Tilda Swinton.  I thought it was hilarious to see her in such an unlikely role.... I associate her with characters androgynous and wicked, like secretly evil angel Gabriel in John Constantine and the White Witch in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.  I know she has been in a ton of other movies, but those are the two that come to mind when I see her.  Having her play a sardonically feminine and garishly made-up magazine executive was an entertaining shift.
Trainwreck Cons (Spoiler Alert!!):
  • Suicide is treated as inevitable.  Amy is basically warned that her father is contemplating suicide.... and her character looks back at the person warning her, blinks a little, and doesn't say or do a thing in response.  Later, after her father DOES kill himself, there is no reference to the fact that she could have done something to prevent it.  Um, if nothing else, she would have felt guilty or conflicted or something.
  • Death forgives all sins.  Amy's above-mentioned father is a total a@@##le.  He cheats on her mother (with all of her female teachers, we are informed), tries to teach his impressionable young daughters that all relationships are doomed from the outset, and is rude and nasty and offensive to everyone he comes in contact with.  Yet all the sudden at his funeral, Amy claims that he always made her feel loved (yea no, never saw that once) and forces everyone present to raise their hands, agreeing that he was "one of their favorite people" despite the fact that he treated them poorly.  This, honestly, is a sentimental cop-out.  All we ever saw from this character was borderline abusive behavior, and an elegy full of lies doesn't make that okay.
  • Trust is gained via a cheerleading routine.  Aaron eventually tells Amy that he "doesn't feel safe" in their relationship because of the number of guys she slept with before him.  Instead of addressing that and working through it as a couple, they take a relational break... during which she tries to sleep with someone else.  She doesn't succeed, but not because she decides she would rather be faithful to Aaron, but rather because her chosen suitor turns out to be 16 and his mother walks in.  (Seriously??)  Afterwards she gets back together with Aaron, not by honestly addressing his concerns and reestablishing trust, but by donning a cheerleader uniform and doing a dance routine.  *rolls eyes*
  • Married couples are bizarre.  The only married couple we meet in the movie, Amy's sister Kim and her husband, are totally odd.  Well, Kim is sweet and fairly normal, but her husband is quite strange... he and his son from another marriage are constantly with Kim, dressing in matching clothing and speaking in stilted, awkward sentences.  Being married clearly means you must be weird... like, alien from another planet weird.
  • Most of the funniest scenes are in the preview.  Exceptions being the scene where Amy names the fictional teams she roots for ("the Orlando.... Blooms...."), the restaurant scene where the doctor calls for the check, and pretty much every scene with LeBron.  **oops, no, just rewatched the preview and the Orlando Blooms joke is in there too.  Oh well...
If you love Amy Schumer, Judd Apatow, or LeBron James, I would say go ahead and see this movie -- its funny, and it means well.  Just don't hope for a logical story line, or any kind of mature reflection on life and relationships.  But hey, this is a "rom-com" after all, so maybe it was overly idealistic of me to hope for that in the first place?  *sigh*  And yes, I pretty much mull like this over every movie I see; it is something of a curse.

Can you think of any rom-coms that DO manage to reflect on life and relationships without being cheesy?  I feel like 13 Going on 30 does a pretty good job... any others?  I kind of want to prove to myself that it can be done now, so let me know your recommendations in the comments!

* the (staged? yea, pretty sure staged) outtakes reel is here, and if you don't mind the R-rating, is pretty hilarious in its own right.

FREE and FUN Friday Linky Blog Hop Party! Link-Up Humor, Smile-Worthy Posts, Giveaways, Free Stuff, and more!

Hurrah for our second week of FREE and FUN Friday at Devastate Boredom!  We had an awesome inaugural link-up with y'all last week, and are SO appreciative to the awesome bloggers who joined us.  :)

Drum roll for our features please!!

The prize for the most clicks goes to...........
"That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It" via Munofore...
A hilarious recounting of a difficult day in the life of a heroic mother, who manages to overcome all the temptations and trials the devil brings her way... until she finally succumbs to the siren call of dessert.  ;P  (honestly, by then I say she had TOTALLY earned it)

The runner up:
"DIY Quote Art... and Free Printable Sign! via Painted Hive...
A clear and simple project tutorial AND amazingly gorgeous free download, how fantastic is that?  (This is probably the best printable I've seen in a while... I can't wait to try out the project myself!)

Miss Congeniality Prize:
Dishes, Dishes, Dreaded Ding Dong Dishes, via purpleslobinrecovery
This entrant was at a disadvantage in terms of clicks, due to joining the party towards the end of the window, but in addition to linking up several very funny posts, she was also by far our most enthusiastic participant.  She left comments pretty much everywhere!  Not only are you funny in your own right, but you're also a natural-born encourager, Ms. Purple-Slob-In-Recovery, and that deserves a shout-out!

Now on to this week's fun!

This link party has two purposes....
1) To highlight free stuff, particularly personal downloadable/printable freebies, offered by the author.  Pretty much anything is awesome, as long as it is completely free, in its entirety, no strings attached.  Collections of free printable or a post showing how you used a free download in a DIY project are fantastic too, as long as they clearly credit and link back to the freebies' original creator.

2)  To showcase humorous, entertaining, lighthearted posts, that will perk up our Friday and set the weekend off on the right foot.  That crazy thing that happened last week, hilarious media reviews, pinterest disasters, chuckle-worth DIY projects... anything that will make us smile!

Basically, when it comes to  FREE and FUNNY, you are in the right place!

Rules For Link-Ups:
  • To begin -- follow Devastate Boredom on your favorite reader or social media!  Bloglovin', Twitter, and email links below for your convenience - more options available on the sidebar.
  • You may post up to three links, but please visit and comment on a different link for each one.  If you add 3 links, you should also click and comment at least 3 times!
  • Link back please!-- you can grab the button if you like, but a text link is great too.  :)
All links that follow the rules will be tweeted AND pinned, and will be eligible to be featured next week!!  :D

Good stuff to know:

  • You are welcome to use an older post that still deserves traffic, but you may not link to the same thing more than once in a month.  Keep things fresh here, people!
  • This party goes live at 11:30 am central time each Friday.
  • Giveaways are welcome!
  • Please only link up other linkies if they are on topic... FREE and/or FUN!
  • Recipes do not count as a freebie, sorry.
  • Please no posts selling anything, and no "free" ads that are generating commission (these will be deleted).

Have fun!!
